I am a firm believer that relationships thwart one's goals. You fall in love, or you get involved with someone and that's it. All your life's passions are going down the drain as you replace all those mighty aspirations with one thing - your partner.
Now, don't be all, "You're so hard-hearted." with me. You have to admit that in some part, what I just said is true. Especially with the girls - as if not having a boy by your side makes you less of a person as the next girl with a boy attached to her hip.
Like I've said, I've seen this plenty to know what I don't want. I don't want to lose sight of my dreams, and I don't want to be blinded by love. It will only serve to destroy me and my sense of self. Perhaps I have yet to experience the positive effects of this thing called love, but that's another story for another day.
So naturally, you'd think that coming across an article that notes how entertainment agencies are not allowing their girl group members to get involved in boy-girl relationships, I'd applaud, right?
Wrong.
While I agree that dating and being in a relationship serve as distractions to success, I also believe in free will.
Who am I to judge if a girl wants to give up her future for a boy? Muahaha. And yes, I do know that the sentence above contains judgemental connotations. What I mean is that I don't like girls to make such decisions very much, but hey, it's your life. I ain't gonna be pushing my nose into your life and preach.
But these entertainment agencies are going a little bit too far. When I read their answers, I feel like they are more concerned about fame and fortune than what matters - the music. I guess that's why a lot of girl groups have been putting up extremely bad music.
Here're some quotes that don't sit quite well with me:
1. The most important image for girl groups is ‘lovers of all men’. Even with small love scandals, the idea of being ‘one man’s woman’ will drastically take a hit on the popularity.
UHM. What? Have you seen the pervy men at their performances? The stay-in, bespectacled, gamer with bad skin who waves the GG pink lightstick while chanting feverishly? The middle-aged male fans who act as if they were 21, wide-eyed and fascinated by the hot shorts and low cut tops?
And hello?! Lovers of ALL men? Being one man's woman is wrong?! Are you encouraging promiscuity?...
Side note: This is a vicious cycle isn't it? The girls dress suggestively cos they want to attract all men, but certain types of pervy men are not allowed? Double standards?
2. As girl groups usually need to show off their sexiness and cute charms, it is difficult for 30 year old women to go through with the cute concepts.
I hate cute concepts. "Cute" tends to make people take you less seriously.
But what they are trying to say here is that there is an expiry date for women in the entertainment industry?
We've had enough of the word "expiry", ok! There's the biological clock, left on the shelf, expiry date. Makes us sound like commodities. I detest that.
Why don't you let us be what we want to be, and freely accept us for who we are? Why do we have to be cute at one point in our lives and not cute after that? Why can't we choose?
But I think the root problem lies not with these agencies. They're profit-oriented, and of course, they'd write policies that would support this.
Girls, you have a choice too. Is fame and fortune so important that you cannot refuse to sign such ridiculous contracts that ban you from living your life freely?
You can do as many things as you want at one time. If you can date and be successful, then good for you! (I am afraid I can't do this. I've gone through enough broken promises made by my girlfriends to be convinced that I might turn into one of them.)
If you don't like wearing hot shorts and suffering your dignity, throw those stupid costumes back at the stylists!
But if you choose to give up your right to your sense of self, then I'm sorry. I won't stop you, go ahead.
Just don't regret it later. I won't bother even saying "I told you so."
